Grand staff reading
Quick drill · about 3 minutes
Grand staff reading
Both clefs, ledger lines, and accidentals.
- 10 to 15 short answers, including repeat practice. Only first answers count toward the score.
- Play notes with the letter keys: A S D F… for white keys, W E T Y U for black, Z X to change octave. Enter continues.
What this drill covers
Questions switch between the two clefs, just like reading real piano music. The first level is the notes on the lines of both clefs. Next come ledger-line notes, especially around middle C where the clefs meet. The last level adds sharps and flats such as F sharp, B flat and C sharp.
Why it helps
Reading each clef on its own is one thing; switching between them without mixing them up is the real skill, and it is what two-hand sheet music asks of you.
Each round is 10 to 15 questions. Notes you miss come back sooner, notes you know come back later, and the next level opens once most of the current one sticks.
