Rhythm tap

Quick drill · about 3 minutes

Rhythm tap

Hear the count-in, tap in time.

  • 10 to 15 short answers, including repeat practice. Only first answers count toward the score.
  • Tap the beat with Space.

What this drill covers

The first level is quarter, half and whole notes in 4/4. Next come rests and eighth notes. Then 3/4 time and dotted notes, and finally trickier eighth-note patterns such as a dotted quarter followed by an eighth. You tap with the space bar or the screen.

Why it helps

Listeners forgive a wrong note, but a wrong rhythm changes the music. Tapping rhythms apart from finding keys tells you for sure that you are counting right.

Each round is 10 to 15 questions. Notes you miss come back sooner, notes you know come back later, and the next level opens once most of the current one sticks.
