Find the key
Quick drill · about 3 minutes
Find the key
Press the key for each note name.
- 10 to 15 short answers, including repeat practice. Only first answers count toward the score.
- Play notes with the letter keys: A S D F… for white keys, W E T Y U for black, Z X to change octave. Enter continues.
What this drill covers
It starts with the seven white keys around middle C. Once those stick, the black keys in the same octave open up, then the white and black keys an octave below and above. At first any octave counts as long as the note name is right; later levels ask for the exact octave.
Why it helps
Finding a key without counting up from C is the base for everything else: reading notes, playing chords, following a score. The groups of two and three black keys are your map, and this drill makes reading that map quick.
Each round is 10 to 15 questions. Notes you miss come back sooner, notes you know come back later, and the next level opens once most of the current one sticks.
