The seven note names

4 min Lesson 2/4
  1. 1. White keys, black keys
  2. 2. The seven note names
  3. 3. Middle C and octaves
  4. 4. Finger numbers and posture

Key idea There are only 7 note names: C D E F G A B (Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si). After B, the names start again at C.

The seven white keys in each 12-key pattern carry the seven names. Chord symbols, lead sheets, and most apps use letters, while many teachers say Do Re Mi. Knowing both pays off.

  • C = Do
  • D = Re
  • E = Mi
  • F = Fa
  • G = Sol
  • A = La
  • B = Si (Ti)
Press play to hear C D E F G A B C.

Find each note from the black keys

  • C: just left of the two. D: between the two. E: just right of the two.
  • F: just left of the three. G and A: inside the three. B: just right of the three.
C D E surround the group of two. F G A B surround the group of three.
