Finger numbers and posture

3 min Lesson 4/4
  1. 1. White keys, black keys
  2. 2. The seven note names
  3. 3. Middle C and octaves
  4. 4. Finger numbers and posture

Key idea Thumb is 1, little finger is 5, on both hands. Keep the hand gently curved, as if resting on a small ball.

Beginner music often prints finger numbers above notes. Thumb 1, index 2, middle 3, ring 4, little 5. Both hands use the same numbers, so on the left hand, finger 1 is on the right.

Left hand in C position

Finger 5 on C3, finger 1 on G3.

Right hand in C position

Finger 1 on C4, finger 5 on G4.

The small numbers are right-hand fingers.

Sitting and hand shape

  • Bench: sit on the front half, centred on middle C. Elbows level with or a little above the keys.
  • Distance: your fingers reach the keys with elbows slightly bent, without leaning forward.
  • Hand: naturally curved, wrist level with the back of the hand, never sagging below the keys.
  • Fingers: play on the fingertips. The thumb plays on its outer side corner.
  • Shoulders and feet: shoulders loose, both feet flat on the floor.
Try it

Right hand in C position. Press the keys under finger 1, then 3, then 5.
