Bắc kim thang

Traditional (Southern Vietnam) · Key of G major · 2/4 · ♩ = 100

Bắc kim thang is a well-known children’s folk song from southern Vietnam, cheerful and built from short lines. Pianory’s version is in G major and 2/4, 13 bars long, with both hands together. The right hand stays in one position from D to B, so there is almost no shifting.

What makes it tricky

The 2/4 time with dotted eighths and sixteenths gives it the skip, and it is also where most mistakes happen. It is in G major, so the key signature has an F sharp, even though the right-hand tune never touches F.

How to practice it

  1. Sing or clap the rhythm first. If you know the words, the rhythm comes much more naturally.
  2. Pick Right hand at 50%, put your thumb on D and keep that position for the whole piece.
  3. Pick Both at 75%. The left hand has few notes, so focus on both hands landing on the beat together.
