Canon in D

Johann Pachelbel · Key of D major · 4/4 · ♩ = 92

Johann Pachelbel wrote the Canon in D in the late 17th century over a bass line that repeats without stopping, and today it is heard at countless weddings. Pianory’s 13-bar version is in D major: the left hand plays the repeating bass in half notes while the right hand plays three melody variations above it.

What makes it tricky

D major has two sharps, F sharp and C sharp. The left hand goes very low, down to low D (D2) on a ledger line below the bass clef. The right hand spans almost two octaves across the variations.

How to practice it

  1. Pick Left hand at 75% and play the bass loop until your hand knows it. It repeats through the whole piece.
  2. Pick Right hand at 50% and learn one variation at a time, each a few bars long.
  3. Pick Both at 50%. Since the left hand repeats, let it run on autopilot and give your attention to the right hand.
