Minuet in G

Christian Petzold · Key of G major · 3/4 · ♩ = 104

The Minuet in G comes from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook (1725). It was long credited to J. S. Bach and is now attributed to Christian Petzold. Pianory’s 16-bar version is in G major and 3/4, with eighth-note runs in the right hand over a bass line that keeps moving.

What makes it tricky

The left hand is not chords but a second melody, so each hand has its own path. The right hand runs from F sharp up to high G, and good fingering is what keeps you from running out of fingers halfway.

How to practice it

  1. Pick Right hand at 50% and practice one 4-bar phrase at a time. Choose a fingering and keep it the same every time.
  2. Pick Left hand and practice the bass line alone until it sounds like a tune of its own.
  3. Pick Both at 50%. If one phrase keeps tripping you up, open the piece in Practice and loop just that phrase.
