Chapter 2 · The staff and clefs

Treble clef: the right hand

5 min Lesson 2/4
  1. 1. The five-line staff
  2. 2. Treble clef: the right hand
  3. 3. Bass clef: the left hand
  4. 4. The grand staff and ledger lines

Key idea The treble clef curls around line 2, so line 2 is G (G4). Lines: E G B D F. Spaces: F A C E.

Treble clef is for higher notes, usually the right hand. Its inner curl wraps around line 2: that line is the G above middle C (G4). Every other note follows from it.

G4
G4 sits on line 2, where the clef curls.

Lines and spaces

EGBDF
Five lines: E G B D F, "Every Good Boy Does Fine". Each line skips one letter.
FACE
Four spaces: F A C E, they spell FACE.

Three landmarks

  • Middle C (C4): on a short ledger line just below the staff.
  • G4: line 2, where the clef curls.
  • C5: space 3, right in the middle of the staff.
